The watercolours used as backgrounds on this site were commissioned by Queen Victoria and painted by Kenneth MacLeay in 1863; they are perhaps the finest depictions of Highland Dress of the Victorian period.

This painting shows Sergeant-Major Donald MacBeath of the Atholl Highlanders and Willie Duff (who was considerably cleaned up in the painting), both employees of the Atholl Estate. MacBeath was a noted marksman, and was head Forester on the estate for many years. Willie was a 'scruffy character' in the area; he'd joined the fifth Duke's service as a game-watcher in 1839, and was known as an expert fly-tier and fishermen. He kept a 'beat' of the Tay river for the Duke in Dunkeld, the family residence, now an hotel.
